Epic Games is giving players an unconventional way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, with the launch of the two-week Love and War event in Fortnite. Just a few days after that, big changes are in store as the long-awaited Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 2 finally kicks off.

Fortnite is one of the most active live games around from a development perspective, with major updates and limited time events launching more quickly than casual players can even keep up with. Not long ago, Epic revealed another new Fortnite game type, called Liferun, this time made in collaboration with the International Red Cross and debuting at PAX South. Of course, nothing in Fortnite is quite as popular as the battle royale mode that made it a household name, so that’s where Epic Games focuses most of its energy with frequent patches and crossovers with popular movies. Many expected that the next big news from Fortnite would be a rumored crossover with Birds of Prey rather than a new game mode, though that particular tie-in is still expected to make an appearance soon.

The Love and War event gives Fortnite fans a new way to play for a limited time. From February 5th through 17th, players can enter the new Search and Destroy mode to earn special cosmetic rewards, according to Epic. In the new mode, two teams of six players will face off, one trying to plant a bomb and the other trying to defuse it. The teams play until one wins four rounds, with players earning gold that can be spent between rounds by taking out enemies or completing objectives. If that sounds familiar, it’s probably because it bears more than a passing resemblance to the ultra-popular first-person shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Playing the new Search and Destroy mode will earn progress toward completing Love and War challenges, which reward players with free cosmetic gear. The rewards include emotes, sprays, weapon skins, and more. Players who are willing to lay out a little real-world cash will also find new gear in the Fortnite item shop for the duration of Love and War.

Fortnite players don’t show many signs of getting tired of the popular battle royale mode altogether, but it’s still nice to have a new event now and then to shake things up. For anyone waiting on the start of the delayed Chapter 2, Season 2, it’s also a great time to return and get back into fighting shape while earning some new cosmetics before it launches.
