Epic Games has finally announced the release date of Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 2. The first season has lasted longer than expected and many wondered when the next season would come. Those individuals now have their answer - and it’s sooner than they think.

Fortnite Chapter 2 started in a manner that both captivated and frustrated gamers. Fortnite streamers reached for content as for days the image of Fortnite’s black hole was all that they could access on the game, which remained unplayable between the final season-end event of Chapter 1 and the beginning of Chapter 2. Many suggested that Epic Games had simply decided to end the franchise. Others, more correct, people postulated that the black hole would persist until update day and simply used the Konami Code to play a hidden pizza-Space Invaders game to kill time. Finally, the second chapter began - with a new island and an exceedingly long first season.

Epic Games announced in a post on Fortnite’s official website Friday that Season 2 is indeed coming on Thursday, February 20. The current season will close out with a “new two-week event” as well as more overtime challenges. The post includes a heavily-redacted teaser about things to come. The teaser promises that the season will feature [redacted] with multiple [redacted]. “We can’t brief you on all of next Season’s secrets just yet…” the company says.

The developer also announced that the game would in early February move to Unreal Engine’s Chaos physics engine, which is in testing with a small number of players. The goal, the company says, is to “ensure that Fortnite still feels like Fortnite” despite the changes. Epic Games expects some “bumps” along the way and says it will “closely monitor feedback” so issues can be fixed.

Fortnite is an immensely popular game with more than 250 million players in total and over 148 million hours of views on Twitch according to figures from 2018. Fortnite set a record for the largest annual revenue in gaming history at $2.4 billion in a single year. Fortnite Players have a lot to love, and the second season is surely exciting for them - especially with the promised updates to the game’s infrastructure. What’s to come in Season 2? Epic Games wants to leave that a mystery for now. But players now at least know when they can dive into the next season’s content, which will surely involve numerous expensive skins and other cosmetics on which they can spend their money.
