With the popularity of Fortnite, account security has become an important topic for Epic Games and their players. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is one of the most secure ways people can keep their gaming information safe. 2FA is a type, or subset, of multi-factor authentication. It is a method of confirming claimed identities by using a combination of two different pieces of information.

A good example of two-factor authentication is the withdrawal of money from an ATM. In order to withdraw money, the PIN and the debit card are needed. In the case of Fortnite however, players will need to enter a code from their preferred two-factor authentication method in order to be signed into their account. Players will also be prompted to enter the 2FA passcode when they sign in for the first time after enabling the feature if they use a new device, clear their browser cookies, or thirty days pass since they last signed in. This guide will show players how to enable Two-Factor Authentication on their Fortnite account.

How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication in Fortnite

  • Got to Account Settings on the Epic Games website. Click on the Password & Security tab to view security settings At the bottom of the page, under the Two-Factor Authentication heading, click the Enable Authenticator App or Enable Email Authenticator button depending on the authentication method of choice.

The Enable Email Authenticator button will set up 2FA using the player’s Epic Games email account. That means when the player signs in from a new device, clears their browser cookies, or signs in again after thirty days pass, then they will need to use a code that is sent to their email. This is generally the more common two-factor authentication method.

The Enable Authenticator App Button will set up 2FA using a third-party authentication application. If players already have multiple two-factor authentications that they use for other accounts, then this might be a more convenient option for them. Players can consolidate all of their two-factor authentications into one of these apps. Like the email authentication, when players sign in from a new device, clear their browser cookies, or sign in again after thirty days pass, then they will need to use a code that is sent to the authenticator app. If players prefer to use an authenticator app for two-step verification, there are quite a few common authenticator apps available on a variety of mobile app stores:

  • Google Authenticator Microsoft Authenticator Authy
